Meet the brand new ARRI Orbiter Beam Optic

Share with friends

ARRI recently released a brand new Orbiter Beam Optic. It is another addition to their long list of lighting fixtures and accessories. It has been designed to create optimal brightness for long-throw applications. Essentially, the Orbiter Beam turns the Orbiter into a parallel beam light that can be used for long throw distances and indirect bounce. Let us take a detailed look.

Beam-Intro-M26

Firstly, the Beam optic transforms the Orbiter into the brightest full-color LED spot light on the market, thanks to it’s new reflector-focused optical concept and the Orbiter’s Spectra light engine. Also, the Orbiter Beam produces an illuminance level that is comparable to the Daylight M-Series M18, enabled by its tighter beam angle.

Here are some other key features of the ARRI Orbiter Beam

1) High intensity output thanks to new optical concept

A light test was done by Timm Brückner who is a gaffer in Germany and he has the following to say:

“The first test with the Orbiter‘s new parallel Beam Reflector revealed an exciting light output, exceeding the Orbiter‘s fresnel lens at full spot by 1,5 stops.” In my eyes, ARRI’s projection optics have already brought the Orbiter a giant leap forward—I am sure the Beam will become a further accessory that reinforces the Orbiter‘s position as a versatile every-day set tool. It will become a future standard in my lighting package.”

2) 4° parallel beam

The Orbiter Beam provides a punchy and defined 4° shaft of parallel and homogeneous light.

3) Reflector and snoot can be easily separated and stacked for convenient storage and transport

The optic consists of two parts, the reflector and the snoot. As a result, it can easily be separated and stacked for convenient storage and transport.

4) Manual focus adjustment for a soft or hard beam edge

The Orbiter Beam utilizes a unique manual focus adjustment that allows for a soft or hard beam edge.

5) Effortless mounting thanks to Orbiter’s QLM

Orbiter’s unique Quick Lighting Mount (QLM) system allows the Beam optic to be mounted safely and quickly.

6) Can be attached to any Orbiter color version

TECH SPEC

The Orbiter Beam has a large aperture, yet its housing is compact (approx. 573 mm x 548 mm x 548 mm / 22.6 in x 21.6 in x 21.6 in) and lightweight (5,9 kg / 13 lbs.). It is also important to note that the reflector’s diameter of 530 mm (20.9 in) is similar in size to the M90.

Application possibilities

This parallel beam light is perfectly suited especially within cinematic applications—either for long throw distances or indirectly bounced. Also, the Orbiter Beam optic is an ideal option for creating the illusion of natural light from a distance. Interestingly, this unique and authentic look of this light fixture makes it a go-to choice for filmmakers. This is especially useful in simulating sun- or moonlight in film projects.

MOUNTING

Orbiter’s unique Quick Lighting Mount (QLM) system allows the Beam optic to be mounted safely and quickly. Also, the LiOS2 or higher update ensures an automatic recognition of this new optic.
